A. What initial research have you done now we’re a week further down the line from the visit/brief handout? Give two examples [or web links] found that are relevant.
B. What were the two most interesting points about the Weston’s site visit last week [if you didn’t make it then apply this to the brief].
Pictures from the site visit:

1 So far I have looked at other gift box on google and started thinking if there are easy ways to change the design. Also I have been thinking of good graphics to be printed on the box.
ReplyDeleteI am planning to buy an existing giftbox and take it apart to see how it is constructed.

ReplyDeleteA. Initial research i have done at this point is i have researched into different eco friendly materials, and came across some useful and notable materials that i might consider is bamboo, cork, reclaimed wood and recycled paper, although this is just initial thinking some of these may not be useful when finally designing. I have also looked at pre existing eco friendly packaging for different kind of products:
http://bestdesignoptions.com/?p=12436
B. I felt the two most interesting points on the Weston's visit was the fact that they still use many organic trees instead of the bushels and there distribution technique and how quickly things like the kegs are turned over.
C. At this point i don't have a specific idea that jumps out but i plan to research into pre existing package designs for cider as well as lager and wine, especially gift packaging for them, to get a few starting points, as well as doing some research into what attracts the eye of the target market.
A)I have been looking as reusable packaging for bottles and found an one,
ReplyDeletehttp://inhabitat.com/2010/10/21/diy-drink-it-yourself-xylophone-made-from-beer-bottles/
http://inhabitat.com/2010/10/13/packaging-the-future-packaging-reuse-what-a-concept/
B)The most intresting part of the Westons visit for me was the talk at the end as that gave a great insight as what they were looking for.
Also the process itself, the way its produced is note worthy in itself and gave me a few thoughts about packaging. e.g. they stated they are one of the few producers to still use wooden barrels.
C)My intial thoughts are to use wood or card and I am aiming to have a second use for the packaging. I intend to make the packaging contain two bottles as it seems wasteful to make packagin for one and counteracts the idea of it being green. With all my ideas so far they are intended to flat pack for transport and have a glueless assembely..

A) Following the brief and the visit to Westons I have looked into other sorts of food packaging using recycled materials.

b) Two of the most interesting points from Weston’s I found where; the way that the produce, apples and pears are transported to the site via water and gravity. This is an interesting point as it introduces a limited requirement for fuel and shows sustainability, that fact that the run off water is then re-used within the orchards as well was also quite interesting. It was also quite interesting how well the company was doing. In the world of alcohol cider is seen more as a clean living style of drink as opposed to the chemically constructed lagers such as Carlsberg. The fact the cider is a local British company using local stocks ad having sustainability as a major factor is seeing its profits increase by around 60% a year is surprising.
c) Leading on from the research there are some initial ideas as a possible solution. One thing that I picked up from the brief was that the attachment of some sort of gift with the drink was quite important. They suggested a glass, as it has been successful before. Combining the packaging link for air packs with the packaging design could involve a 100% recyclable box and air bag approach. This would allow for simple box shape designs which where also an issue for the company for ease of transport. The challenge would be to make this an attractive design. Either this or perhaps minimal packaging around the top of the bottle neck with the glass positioned over the top of the bottle secured with either a cardboard or twine design, something that would reflect the natural aspect of the company ands its “green credentials”.
A. I have been looking at packaging design in general. I've looked at a broad range of products and design styles to try and inspire my own style direction. I've also collected a few examples of sustainable design (Amazon delivery packages) so I can take notes about their implementation of the eco design manifesto.
ReplyDeleteB. Two most interesting points…
1. The Organic Apple Cider 2. The Organic Pear Cider. (I keed I keed)
I found the talk with the head of marketing really useful. It was interesting to hear what his team had spoken about briefly and to hear his views on what makes a consumer buy their product for a more expensive price in the holiday season.
It was also beneficial to be taken around the farm by a tour guide who was obviously passionate about what the company does. This helped to form an image of the company as a whole, which will make styling the packaging to suit their ethics and personality easier.
C. I'm excited to try to create a design that will entice a consumer into purchasing the gift set and I'm looking into methods used by other designer to achieve this. As far as style and packaging methods go I'm still at a very early stage but my research into other product/packaging design is helping me pin point what I think will suit the image of Westons and be enticing for a customer/retailer.

ReplyDeleteA. After having a good look at the primary research photos and other bits taken from the trip, I have also looked at relevant forms of packaging, sustainable ideas and the current design approach of cider manufacturers. For example I have l looked at Bulmers & Magners packaging which in my opinion is simple and attempts to reflect their 'classy' modern champagne style bottles. However I think Weston has the potential to take a different approach which is why i have also looked at eco-friendly related packaging and that which reflects traditional, old oak trees and sun filled orchardy themes.
B. I think the main aspect I feel will contribute greatly to the project was the overall feeling of heritage and pride they have at the place. The history and traditional use of storage will certainly benefit the generation of ideas. I also thought understanding the production process will help us to develop them further keeping in mind the ethics held by the company.
C. As it stands I feel that Cider has crept its way into the mainstream as a more fashionable trendy drink in the last few years. I think that weston has a chance to be at the forefront of that but with a far more sustainable approach than that of Bulmers and Magners. Keeping in mind there heritage and traditionally themed way, it will be interesting to see what ideas may crop up. Obviously the packaging itself to comply to the requirements of the brief but I think implementing the use of sustainable materials in general will contribute to Weston's appeal.
1.
ReplyDeleteI have started looking into basic packaing ideas of all product packaging areas to just create a wider knowledge when coming to narrowing it down for Eco/sustainablity & functionablity standards etc.
LINK(a) http://www.sustainablepackaging.org/
LINK(b) http://www.westons-cider.co.uk/
2.
-The first point would be the history of the business, the sense of keeping true to their own standards for the production and therefore the packaging itself. Was clear to see the briefs solution has to fit in with that.
-The second point would be the openness in the design to the brief, you can go in alot of totally different directions, which therefore opens up alot of research openings for greater understanding.
3.
Intial thinking now is just to get a wide ragne of research, and then to norrow it down into stages. In doing this you can then go in the direction your designs are, or even explore different options still. Design wise, you can get a feel straight away for what would and wouldn't be suitable.
I have looked into a number of packaging options that are already out there in the market for bottle packaging, including the ways that they are presented, transported etc. I've also researched in depth into sustainable materials that have or could be used as well as ideas for the annoymous valued object trying to find ways to be both original and sustainable. I don't have any web links as examples but i have found heaps of useful books from the library such as:
ReplyDeleteSpecial packaging : [structural package designs 2] by Roojen, Pepin
Eat me : delicious, desirable, successful food packaging design Hargreaves, Ben
Designing sustainable packaging, Boylson, Scott
The points i found most interesting was just how sustainable a company they had going on from sourcing only from local farmers to giving back their waste to the farmers to feed their livestock and how Westons are actively trying to find solutions to minimise their carbon footprint i.e. lowering the number of trucks used to transport their product.
My initial thinking has been focused on finding a packaging design that is simple, both reuseable and recycleable but how to use the packaging to tie in with the annoymous object in some way. i.e. it the object was seeds the box would be used as a guard to put around the plant once it starts to grow etc.
oh hey
ReplyDeleteI have been looking into small based local farms to see what type of products they have and also to see if they have any unsual packaging, When you go to farmers markets you normally find that these companys have different stlyes of packaging due to lack of funds, but sometimes this works in there favour. http://www.farmcider.co.uk/cider/containers.asp
Our Environmental Policy http://www.farmcider.co.uk/cider/environmental-policy.asp
the two most intresting points of the morning ---
- westons buy in apples from there local area to make sure there product stays within herefordshire.
- westons cider has trippled there size within the last 3 years and they are still growing as a company.
im still in the early stages of my thinking towards a possible product, not to sure what types of material i want to use as of yet.
A.
ReplyDeleteI looked at a blog post with interesting (though mostly bottle)pacakaging design for alcoholic products:
http://www.designyourway.net/blog/inspiration/interesting-alcoholic-drinks-package-inspiration-42-examples/
And then some talk about the selling of mild alcoholic drinks in Christmas time:
http://www.design4retail.co.uk/2009/11/placing-prominent-christmas-alcohol-displays-to-pull-in-the-punters/
B.
The thing that I catched the strongest was the barrels and their importance to the production at Weston's.
- history, every barrel named, each generation names its own barrels, it's almost like there's some personification going on
Also, I was quite surprised with the extent of the organic production. Loved the old orchards.
C.
At the moment I've started to think if the barrels could feature in the packaging somehow as they really seem to be very essential to the company. The problem is to find out an easy way to put together a cylinder shape. The material would have to be carefully chosen but also sustaibnable. Other problems are to import the Christmas theme to this as well as making it appealing but a good size for the supermarket shelves and transportation.
Also thought about the size of the package in terms of how many bottles it would hold. I feel that a mild alcohol like cider wouldn't necessarily sell in single packaging as that tends to be more for stronger alcohols like for example whiskeys. Therefore the package should hold at least two bottles. I haven't really thought about the gift item yet.

ReplyDeleteA) sustainablepackaging.com, packagingdigest.com and google searches on existing eco friendly packaging.
b1) The tour showed how important the heritage was to weston
b2) Listening to the client gave a much better understanding on the brief
c) Possibly using PET plastic bottles for the cider with PET plastic gift cups and designing the packaging to fit with Weston's heritage but having a modern twist.
that was adam by the way
ReplyDeleteoh hey its adam (again)

B) Visiting the site gave me a better and clearer understanding of the company and its goals, because before going there i wouldn't have thought it was so big and 'modern'. How Andy was describing it sounded to me like they were a bit tree hugger'ish, but they did make it obvious that they wanted to head to that direction.
The second point i found interesting was to hear about the actual brief from the marketing side, because we usually dont get that
C) At this early stage i am thinking about more efficient and eco friendly packaging, i have also been looking at past Christmas designs on bottles to give me some examples.
Nathan
ReplyDeleteA. used google looking at different packages.
B.the interesting points i have taken from westons are the history of the company and how organic the products are and how they want to minimize there impact to the environment. These points are important to westons and should be included in our gift ideas.
C. my initial thinking for a possible solution would be to use a type of packaging similar to the packaging of an expensive whisky bottle and re create the package to be eco friendly and to have a secondary usage for example turing the package into a plant pot.
I have began looking at existing xmas gift wrapping and existing all-year round wrapping. this will come of much use when approaching the designing stage incorporating attributes that work and leaving behind ones that aren't as successful. taking photographs of all of the different cider types and existing gift wrapping related products at westons will prove to be useful as you can already see the styles and ideas they base their promotional material around.
ReplyDeletelearning about the cider contents at westons and production process will be good knowledge to have as adding information to the product can then be done in an educated way.
i will definately be aiming to produce an item that when has finished its primary use can then be used for a secondary. i think it is very important that the product protects the bottles as obviously glass is brittle, they will also be separated as stood next to each other bash each other and potentially damage or shatter. i am beginning to look at materials and am thinking of using a rigid, durable material that wont be too heavy or difficult to put together by hand.
Comments by [Anna Jarvis]
ReplyDeleteA. I have begun by going back to what we have looked at in previous sessions and thought about the reasons people have started to change the way they design things. For example the PUMA design for new shoe box/bag.
B. (I) The talk from the marketing manager was really relevant and extremely helpful. I thought it was just a huge flow of facts and helpful information that has really benefited my initial ideas and thoughts about the brief.
(ii) Another point was the way their system works to make them a more eco friendly site. Including the fact that their staff only come from a 10 mile radius, reducing car pollutions. They have a very close relationship with their local farmers and the community and it’s seen as very important for them to keep this up so that they can be as sustainable now and in the future. The way they bring their apples down into liquidation through gravity is clever and then taking all waste fruits and using it as animal feed.
C. At this early stage of the production my thinking is how can we create a gifting product then use it for something else, and how would it sync with the eco friendly ethos? This was something that I will be looking at a lot when it comes to initial idea creating. Also another factor relating to this, How can it be easy enough for the packaging to be made my absolutely anyone that will be putting it together? I am really intrigued to really get into this brief and start producing possible ideas and concepts for the next stage of my production.
A. I have researched into different styles of packaging and into different eco friendly ways to pack product using eco friendly materials.
ReplyDeleteB. Visiting the site was interesting because it showed how they used the different types of tree's and about what it means to say they are herefordshire cider.
Also how they are a family company which makes me think there is a family feeling towards the product, warm homely feeling
C. My initial thinking included many different idea's some which i now see not to be possible. For example creating the packaging completly out of glass so that the packaging itself could be the glass you drink the product from, this i decided wasn't possible because the product with the packaging would become to heavy and expensive.
Another more possible solution would be that the packaging turns into a christmas decoration after you have brought it. I was thinking a advent calander but then the gift would need to be given at the beginning of december rather then christmas day. So tree decorations incorpriated into the packaging would seem more appropriate.
I am still not 100% sure of my ideas and would like to come up with something more for everyday use rather then use the packaging as a product for christmas.
For my free gift i wanted to have a free glass but also the apple pin with the apple bites back written on it and use that solgan as part of my teme for the packaging
A: I have don some research on the internet. I have looked at recycle packaging for other product in order to get an idea of how other company deal with eco-friendly package.
ReplyDeleteI have looked up at http://www.newtonrunning.com/community/green-features which they create their packaging 100% Environmentally-friendly.
B: Visiting Weston Cider centre was very interesting. As we can understand the products, such as how they produce it and how they market it, which gave us more information of how we should design the package for them.
C: My initial idea of my design will be 100% recycle. i.e soy ink and recycle cardboard. I am still thinking of the 2nd use of the packaging. I should be able to come up with something soon.
