Here are the (poster submissions) for each student on the Gdes3003 'Green Design' module this semester.
Please note: As well as the poster submissions, many of the students have also submitted ideas for linked social media campaigns which can also be looked at on request. However for time and ease in order that the client can see examples of each person's submissions I have just added the poster elements to this post at this time.
"This module has challenged my perspective of graphic design and has been a valuable opportunity to expand and develop on my skills as a graphic designer by introducing me to topics I had never considered before."
Student comment on submission of work.
This was an interesting brief to be given not only for the design aspect of it, but also to think morally if the design were to be printed using methods that are safe for the environment, as well as learning about what forms of sustainable energies that are currently available or what could be available in the future.
Student comment on submission of work.
"Throughout the project I was able to learn more about what it means to be a more sustainably aware designer, thinking about processes of printing, what materials are being used, whether I am using an unneeded amount of packaging or inks. These thoughts will now stay with me as I progress as a designer and hopefully have a more positive impact on my artwork."

".. I found this module really interesting (and) I felt I learnt a lot on the topic and so many people are oblivious about what’s really happening to the world or how they just put a blind eye to it. I feel that people need to be more aware on the topic as they don’t seem to fully understand climate change and I hope soon that something does get put into place before it is too late."

1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
Looking into different brands such as the world wildlife fund helped with my initial ideas as it is a similar brand as they both work to look after the environment.
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
My final poster is clear and to the point, highlighing the good and bad forms of producing energy in order to show how we need to switch from using fossil fuels to renewable energy.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minas of the British public?
As my poster is clear and straight to the point the public will take on the message of the poster quickly.

1.a. For my final design for the 'Oil Poison', I was really inspired by over the top skull illustrations that feature them melting, and my main inspiration was from the film Snow White & The Seven Dwarves' poison apple, as the poison seeps into it it displays a skull that melts all over it and I really liked the look of it.
b. Illustrations of the Earth took a big importance of my work and I found myself drawing variants of different versions of it before I decided on a final one that I really liked.
c. I also took inspiration from GreenPeace posters, as they are simplified and visually attractive but also are hard hitting and give off an evident message to its audience.
2. I feel as though my FOE Posters are effective as they are simplified enough that the audience and target age range can consume the information the poster gives them and gives them a qualified understanding that fossil fuels are toxic for the Earth. This also allows the audience to get a basic understanding of the topic so they can go off and research more if they are interested.
3. I feel like this will change peoples opinions of Fossil Fuels and the encouragement from my set of posters allows them to think about other actions and what sustainable energies they bring into their homes in the future.

All of the coloured posters work in a set as part of one timeline. There are green, red and charcoal. Green are positive events. Red are negative events (as far as carbon emissions are concerned) and the charcoal ones are neutral events.
There are twelve in the set, including 3 varying ‘2050’ outcomes (positive, negative & uncertain - in green, red and charcoal). Foe liked the idea of a limited edition thing, so I gave them that option.
1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
Zero Carbon Britain - Provided important information to justify design resolve.
Crude: The Incredible Journey of Oil (Documentary) - Formed the base of the design Work.
Levan Patsinashvili: Inspired design direction of final work.
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
The designs are effective because the development work building up to the final pieces was informed by a lot of research. The outcomes were therefore logically resolved.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minas of the British public?
I think that it will subtly raise questions regarding carbon emissions and encourage people to think about the future, rather than the present.

Findings that I found inspired my final design:
Stranger Things the series – my initial idea came from watching the series and how they use a parallel world that has bad things in it. I felt that using something that had been so wildly spoken about that would be noticeable and fun for the target audience.
'The Upside Down' - the parallel world that’s in Stranger Things. This world made me think of using an opposite world idea in the poster to show that there is a good and a bad world – one that has pollution and global warming and one that is the future for the world with solar panels and wind turbines.
Fan Art – I found that looking at other people’s interpretations of both the series and global warming was really interesting and seeing how they may interpret things differently. It helped to see how I could design my poster so that it would connect to people.

1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
WWF's Horrifying-More Horrifying poster about the destruction of ecosystems because it inspired me to design a poster that's as simple and effective as theirs.
NASA's The Grand Tour Poster because of their use of vibrant colours on a plain background that captures your attention.
A drawing of patterned flowers found on Pinterest because the pattern made the it more interesting and noticeable.
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
I believe that they successfully convey the idea that the fossil fuels are an inferior source of energy and that we need to switch to better, renewable ones.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minas of the British public?
I think that by presenting the problem in the shape of choices that you encounter everyday, where you always go for the better option available, it would pick on people's common sense that we should choose the better energy sources options as well, since that's what we'd do for everything else.

1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
I found the documentary 'Before the flood' really inspiring. The realisation that it's our responsibility, especial as designers to relay importance environmental friendly message to the public.
Interview with sign writer to make an informed decision on sustainability was very helpful towards my thinking.
"Destroying nature is destroying life" - These posters I found fascinating
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
I fell my design is successful because it relays the message. it uses humour as a way of connecting with the audience. Environmental awareness can sometimes be misunderstood. I have created a message that can easily understand. Imergy has been used to back up the message and hint at depleting resources.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minds of the British public?
The message I have to create will be understood and taken on board making future decisions, reflective of energy, for the benefit of environmental.

1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
Slater, N & Putnam, R & Robichaud, M influenced my work because of their use of illustrative styles that enabled me to have a visual thought as to the way I wanted to approach my poster. The bold colours, and the intense outlines are what combines the artworks together to make effective designs. The allow for a landscape design which works well for what I wanted to do because I wanted to work with environments in order to tell the story of coal to petroleum.
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
The 6 posters link together both visually and metaphorically through a story, through the theme of the same text and colour scheme, and style overall, the images work together in order to tell the narrative as to what is both good and bad for the world's atmosphere - in regards to elements such as, global warming etc. Through the use of pictograms and sign-lie illustrations they are also able to be communicated throughout any part of the word because it's not just the text that is majorly important with the poster, the illustrations are the most important, but have the text at the top may give english readers some context further about the warning revolving around the manufacturing processing happening in the poster.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minas of the British public?
Hopefully, they will get an understanding as the the repercussions and effects that manufacturers have for the environment. When they do things in order to collect fossil fuels for energy (which are needed, however there are other means in order to collect energy that isn't from non-renewable sources. They should take this under consideration in their own future and then think about whether the ways in which they are living their life is in any way good for the environment, or if there are other ways in which they could do it instead.

Two designers that inspired my designs were Liesl Pfeffer and Shannon Rankin as they both use collage in an interesting way to create an image. The ‘Before the flood’ documentary also inspired me to make a poster that showed a strong message.
I feel that my design shows the result of the damage we are doing to the planet and what will happen if we carry on the way we are. The use of leaves adds an element of nature and shows the contrast between living and dying.
I hope that my poster will shock it’s audience and make them think about the bigger picture and make people think about reducing their use of fossil fuels and become more sustainable.

1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
The work of Eiko Ojala, as it inspired me to also employ a digital paper-cutting method to create the illustrative elements of the posters, which is how he produces his artwork.
Graphical devices utilised within green patriot posters were influential to my final design solutions, as a similar bold, simplistic and eye-catching style is used.
Client Earth talk at the Hive, as the speakers emphasised the importance of telling a story within creative art work that is related to environmental issues.
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
My final designs are effective as they stand out well from a distance, due to the vibrancy of them. The digital paper-cutting method also makes them more effective, as they are well refined, whilst not feeling too flat, and the paper textures add a sense of authenticity and originality.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minas of the British public?
Due to the designs being quite striking to the eye, I feel that they could attract the attention of the British public, and entice them to read and absorb the information depicted on the posters. Followed by hopefully having a thought-provoking effect, which leads to them learning more about how they can help to resolve the ecological crisis that we are experiencing in present time, by switching to renewable energy sources to create the positive view of the future.

1. List 3x ‘Key’ research references/findings that inspired your final design solutions & why (you feel) these are important or significant.
Sustainable book (Voila Eco-Graphic design) – their use of colour for multiple purposes was a really interesting way of achieving sustainable design. I incorporated this into my design as it would reduce the amount of colours used and the paper printed on could act as a colour filler too.
Cutting Edges book – seeing the variety of way collage and photomontage can be done really helped inform my ideas with the likes of Zindel’s and Sviatchenko’s working being an inspiration.
Amy Frearson, Dezeen article – this was a really interesting article to read as Porcelijn says we as designers need to show how to change the world more so than scientists, with our gift of creativity. I questioned my views as well, seeing if my opinion changed from the start of the module about sustainable design and I can say my opinion hasn’t. I still believe sustainable design can be great and if we employ it more, it can be a big trend and help make the environment even more cleaner.
2. Why do you feel that your final designs for your FOE Poster(s) are effective ones?
I do feel my designs are effective as they show progression and guide the public as to what they had, what they have now and what could be in the future to have a better cleaner environment. The use of real imagery gives the public the real perspective on the things out there in the world, therefore making the design more real in a sense.
3. How do you feel that your poster(s) might affect the minas of the British public?
They show the public the timeline of what is happening and guides them to use sustainable alternative technology to help make a difference in the environment, one step at a time.

I feel my posters were successful in meeting the brief, they communicate clearly the message we were expected to out across
I hope that my posters would make the British public stop and think and possible influence them in changing to renewable energy or at least using less fossil fuels.

John Holcroft’s satirical illustrations held a large part of influence over my final designs, his illustrations are a mix of simplicity with satire to highlight a social issue and it’s been proven quite effective as he’s enjoyed a recent viral surgence in his work as a result of his illustrations. His work influenced me to keep my designs nice and simple to convey the point.
Robin Wood’s “Destroying Nature is Destroying Life” is another major influence within my final designs, the relatively simple idea that was produced well really punches home the point and is certainly an effective design that illustrates it’s point well.
The last influential piece of research was actually the mood board provided by the client, it gave an insight into what the client likes as well as opening me up to different pieces I hadn’t seen before. Being able to have a clear picture of what the client wants in mind helped out a lot when designing my posters.
I feel that my FOE posters are effective at communicating a message, based on how simplistic they are. They use minimal colours (greys and blacks) and shapes to communicate an issue. They’re bold, stand out and get people talking about environmental issues.
I feel that my posters will be the equivalent of a catchy song that you can’t get out of your head, just something that will stay in peoples minds and end up encouraging discussion.
